Less Talk, More Photos

We've been in several very nice and lovely campgrounds, but we love Mama Gertie's Hideaway in Swannanoa, North Carolina, best (so far). Just outside of Asheville, Mama Gertie's is tucked into the mountains, even though we're less than a mile off Interstate 40. Not only is the place beautiful, it is clean and the owners are very friendly and helpful.

Mama Gertie's was originally logging land, but it was purchased by the current owners and turned into a well planned campground catering to all campers: Big Rigs down to pop-up tent trailers, tent campers and those who prefer a cabin. And, the place is still growing. New sites opened up above the area where Rob and I are parked and the views up there are long reaching, taking in portions of the Blue Ridge Range; and, there are more sites to come. I'm sure they'll be ready for campers next season.

We took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway heading back toward Boone. We got high enough in elevation, approximately 6,000 feet, to encounter hoarfrost and icicles. And it was beautiful. It reminded me of the ice storm I experienced as a teenager while living in New Jersey, which is still one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen—even though ice storms can be dangerous to body and property. I love the juxtaposition of the hoarfrost and fall colors that I was able to capture in several of my photographs. I hope you enjoy them.

The lovely, little stream that runs through the property in the tent and cabin area.

A view of the area through which the stream runs.

The portion of the stream runs just below one of the cabins.

The wind came up and blew away the smaller leaves shortly after I took these shots.

I love close up shots.

Fall is my favorite season in the east.

Just a short walk from the road.

Another stream—just off the parkway.

Lots of icicles.

My favorite shot of fall and winter all in one.

This was taken in the area of the new campsites being developed. Just dried mud.

A chunk of mica. Lots of it around here.
